When Too Much Detail Slows Everything Down (And How We Solved It)

Look,

The other day, our Design Tech director asked me to check a Revit model containing a group of "simple" canopies.

The file in question was a Revit file of 1.8GB, produced by one of our consultants.

I dove into the model to understand what was going on.

The canopies in question try to imitate vernacular architecture, with organic shapes made of wood.

⚠️ The problem:

These consultants had modeled each of those large and thin branches covering the canopies, as solids - thousands of pipes, coming from a Rhino model.

These solids weren't really necessary.

They weren't providing any value, and they were making the model very difficult to operate.
