4733 trees

How do you spread Computational Design in your office?

Last week, my colleague showed me a project he was working on.

He had a couple of A0 prints with tables of information for 4733 trees:

  1. Tree ID

  2. Tree type

  3. Trunk diameter

  4. Shade diameter

That table came from a CAD file plan.

With a 2d drawing of the 4733 trees.

The main idea for this project is to remove as few trees as possible ok?

To select which trees to keep and which to remove…

Based on the tree’s properties and the design intent

….

I always ask myself: “How can you do this without Grasshopper?”

Is it possible?

I guess…

Is it painful?

Oh yes! Filter manually 4733 trees… for different scenarios… 😭

So my colleague…

Is a great designer with a lot of experience. He is not a computational designer.

We have worked together on a couple of quick projects, mixing his expertise in traditional design with mine in computational design…

And he is starting to see the opportunities to bring Comp D into the mix.

“Isma, can you create a script to help us with all these trees?”

The result?

A Grasshopper script that lets you filter those trees by a combination of their properties:

  1. Tree types

  2. Minimum and Maximum trunk diameter

  3. Minimum and Maximum shade diameter

It was easy to put together.

It was easy to use.

It was handy.

Do you want to see how it works?

See it in action?

I know you do.

And you will.

Bye
