Interviews

I just finished interviewing candidates for a design role, and it got me thinking...

We are looking for:

An architect.

A designer.

Somebody with amazing design skills.

With experience modeling organic and nature-like shapes.

With a bit of knowledge in Revit.

With great skills in Rhino and ideally Grasshopper too.

It´s for a temporary job.

While we weren't specifically looking for a Computational Designer this time…

I appreciate the value that this mindset brings to projects like this one.

….

While interviewing multiple candidates.

I started thinking about their portfolios…

And about how the candidates talk about themselves during the interviews…

And I want to share my point of view, as the one who is interviewing:

  1. Make yourself different from the rest: The purple cow

Interviewers see toons of CVs: YOU NEED TO STAND OUT.

  2. Get personal with your portfolio:

It is not about the projects you have worked on: You are not a studio.

It is about you: about what you did exactly and specifically on those projects.

Show me: your sketches, scripts, drawings…

Make it about YOU, not just the company you worked for.

  3.  ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING:

Show interest in the job, excitement and willingness to learn.

    This is Super Important.

You will be surprised at how many people look nonexcited when coming into an interview…

That´s a deal breaker to me, no matter how good the candidate is.

Got a passion?

Minimally related to the job? talk about it.

Maybe it's generative design or parametric modeling?

Show your passion.

And one more thing:

Bye!
